As the centenary of the Great War begins, historians, teachers, politicians, and the general public are becoming more and more interested in the commemoration of warfare. Every community has a war memorial, which indicates that it is a common theme to want to commemorate soldiers who have died in armed conflict.

This website maps the war memorials around New Brunswick in order to see what the locations of those memorials can tell us about the impact of war and commemoration. There is an emphasis on the memorials to the Great War for a couple of reasons: first, there was a big memorialization push in the 1920s; and second, because it is my own area of study.

This project came out of the Digital History graduate seminar at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. It includes the use of both Google Maps and ArcGIS. I hope that educators, students, and members of the public will find this website useful. If you wish to contact me, please do not hesitate.
